The SunRail DeLand Station Set to Open Monday, Aug. 12

Exciting news for Central Florida commuters and residents alike: the DeLand SunRail station is set to open its doors on Monday, Aug. 12. This new addition marks a significant milestone for the region's public transportation, connecting DeLand to the broader SunRail network and offering new opportunities for travel and development in the area.

A Long-Awaited Expansion

The DeLand station is part of a $40 million expansion that adds 12.2 miles of track from DeBary to DeLand, making it the northernmost stop on the SunRail line. This expansion, which was narrowly approved by the SunRail commission in October 2020, represents years of planning and development aimed at enhancing transportation options in Central Florida.

With this new station, DeLand joins a network that already connects key points across Central Florida, including three stations in Orlando — AdventHealth, Lynx Central, and Church Street — as well as Sanford, Winter Park, and Poinciana. The cost of a one-way trip from Orlando to DeLand is expected to be around $4, making it an affordable and convenient option for travelers.

Connecting Communities and Boosting Local Attractions

DeLand, a charming city located about 48 minutes north of Orlando by car, is now more accessible than ever. Known for its historic downtown, vibrant arts scene, and attractions like Hontoon Island State Park, DeLand is poised to welcome more visitors, thanks to the new SunRail connection.

SunRail sees the area surrounding the new station as a prime location for redevelopment, offering unique opportunities for local residents and officials to create a hub for commuter rail passengers. The city of DeLand is already exploring ways to enhance connectivity between the station and downtown, including the potential introduction of a shuttle service or trolley.

Mayor Chris Cloudman expressed optimism about the impact this new station will have on the community. “Having the ability for residents to take the train in and work somewhere like Orlando Health or Advent and just get off the train and go to work is huge,” Cloudman said in July. The convenience of train travel is expected to be a game-changer for many local residents, reducing the need for long commutes by car and opening up new job opportunities in the region.

Grand Opening Celebration

To mark the opening of the new DeLand station, a grand opening celebration is planned for Friday, just a few days before the first trains start running on Monday, Aug. 12. This event will celebrate the connection of DeLand to the SunRail network, linking this quaint city to the bustling urban centers of Central Florida.

Travel Options and Amenities

SunRail encourages passengers to take advantage of various transportation options to reach the station. For those coming from the south, Volusia County’s VoRide service offers rideshare transport for a flat rate of $2. Additionally, SunRail trains are bicycle-friendly, making it easy for cyclists to bring their bikes along for the ride.

Tickets for SunRail start at just $2, with discounts available for seniors, youth, and passengers with disabilities. For more information and to purchase tickets, you can visit the SunRail website.

As DeLand prepares to welcome this new transportation hub, the city looks forward to the opportunities and growth that the SunRail station is sure to bring. Whether you’re a daily commuter or a weekend explorer, the DeLand SunRail station is set to make travel across Central Florida more accessible and enjoyable than ever before.
